Have a Nice
Sleep
One of Japan’s most famous forms of accommodation is the “capseru hoteru” or capsule hotel. This inexpensive type of hotel is common in major cities across Japan and usually caters to workers who have partied too hard to make it home, have missed the last train or who simply work too hard and don’t have time to go home. Most hotels only accept male guests but some also accept women.
The hotels vary in size from about 50 to over 700 capsules and most are almost entirely self service. All personal items are left in a narrow locker which normally contains a “yukata” (Japanese style robe), towel, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste. The guest can purchase almost anything else that they may need from vending machines.
The capsules themselves are approximately 2m x 1m x 1m in size (about the size of a spacious coffin) and usually contain a light, air conditioning, TV, radio and an alarm clock and a pull-down blind to separate you from the outside world.
Most capsule hotels have shared washroom facilities, a sauna and a large communal bath and although the capsules themselves are consistent in size and layout from one hotel to the next, the quality and quantity of the extra facilities provided (such as restaurants, massage, spa facilities, manga libraries etc.) can vary enormously.
