A-Bomb Dome
Hiroshima
The Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall was the closest structure to survive the atomic bomb in Hiroshima. The bomb exploded almost directly above the building so the blast came down through the roof and some of the walls and the distinctive metal dome survived. The building soon became known to locals as the A-Bomb Dome. In 1966 the people of Hiroshima City decided to preserve the A-bomb Dome indefinitely and it has since been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today, the building stands as the symbol of the A-Bomb and of Hiroshima and as a monument to remember the disaster and the war. It is the symbol of the people's hope that such a tragedy will never happen again.
